Area of Focus
Our giving is focused on issues that directly affect our customers, our employees, our business and our shareholders. These include:
- Improving the quality of education in Georgia
- Protecting the environment
- Preventing cancer
- Diversity initiatives
Our giving also supports designated civic and cultural opportunities, as well as United Way and Project SHARE, a program of The Salvation Army created to help those in need pay their home energy bills and meet other emergency needs.
Moreover, our charitable donations support the many diverse segments of our customers and our communities. Over 30 percent of our giving directly benefits women, children and minorities.
The Georgia Power Foundation also matches qualifying contributions up to $5,000 from Georgia Power employees and retirees to accredited institutions of higher learning. Over the past decade, more than 70 colleges, universities and technical schools have benefited from these matching contributions.
Improving Education
Georgia Power's commitment to education focuses on initiatives to help the company recruit a quality work force of engineers, linemen and other highly skilled employees. We are partnering with Atlanta University Center's dual degree engineering program to assist students with personal development, mentoring and career exploration.
Protecting the Environment
Preserving and protecting the environment is near and dear to the hearts of Georgia Power employees. A "fishing for trash" tournament, or river clean-up, conducted by our Plant Hammond employees on the Coosa River in northwest Georgia is just one of the many programs we support to improve air and water quality, preserve natural resources and protect endangered species.
Preventing Cancer
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in Georgia, with one of every two men and one of every three women projected to get the disease. Georgia Power and its employees and retirees contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to support the Georgia Cancer Coalition and the American Cancer Society in fighting the disease, including money from the employee-founded Run for the REASON, a fund-raising run across the state.
Promoting Diversity
Georgia Power's support of the National Black Arts Festival and the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta are just two examples of the company's commitment to causes that support the diversity of our 2.3 million customers. Our support also reflects the important role that civic and cultural events play in developing a community's full potential.
