Safety Around Power Lines

Storm

When storms strike

Georgia Power prunes trees on a regular, planned cycle for safety and reliability. Debris from our routine tree pruning is removed from the site. When storms strike, it may be necessary for us to remove trees or limbs that are on our lines to restore service. Debris from storm damaged line restoration will not be cleared from the site. Every effort will be made to leave this debris safely out of the way.

To ensure your safety during times of emergency, please do not go near any downed cables or wires or walk into areas where fallen debris or water could be hiding energized wires. Also avoid driving in the affected areas so you don't hamper rescue operations or restoration efforts. Always assume that any cable or wire is energized and do not touch it or anything that it is touching. For additional safety tips, visit storm information.

Safety near high voltage transmission lines

Any activity undertaken near a transmission line poses danger to crews and people nearby. The High Voltage Safety Act regulates the use of tools, equipment or machinery near a conductor. Remember that conductors are energized, uninsulated and dangerous.

The "Call Before You Dig" law requires that before beginning any excavation in the vicinity of underground electrical lines, you must call the Utilities Protection Center (UPC) at 1-800-282-7411, or in Atlanta 770-623-4344, to request underground locate service.

Failure to comply with these laws can result in electrical injuries to workers, fines, and liability.
