Construction to begin on Plant McDonough natural gas pipeline
March 24, 2009
ATLANTA - Construction on the natural gas pipeline that will fuel three new natural gas combined cycle units at Plant McDonough is scheduled to begin April 1, 2009.
The 30-inch pipe will be constructed primarily on existing Georgia Power right-of-way and will be located on a 20-mile route from Union City, Ga. to Plant McDonough.
Georgia Power has selected U.S. Pipeline, a Houston, Texas based pipeline construction and engineering services company, to build the pipeline. This contractor is one of the safest, most reliable and innovative pipeline construction companies in the marketplace, and has built more than 1,200 miles of pipeline in the Unites States, including in Alabama and Georgia. Georgia Power and Southern Company Engineering & Construction Services will be on-site to oversee the work of U.S. Pipeline and its subcontractors throughout the construction phase.
Georgia Power received permission from the Georgia Public Service Commission in 2007 to build the natural gas units at Plant McDonough and the pipeline to serve those units.
The company met several times with affected property owners and other external stakeholder groups to discuss the pipeline project, and held three open houses about the project.
Construction on the pipeline is expected to be completed in June 2010.
Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the nation's largest generators of electricity. The company is an investor-owned, tax-paying utility with rates well below the national average. Georgia Power serves 2.3 million customers in all but four of Georgia's 159 counties.
