Bartletts Ferry History Timeline
1922 - Columbus Electric and Power Company established, after the Columbus Railroad Company bought the Columbus Power Company on April 20, 1922.
1922 - 1924 - Columbus Electric and Power Company hires Stone and Webster, Inc. Builders to evaluate a dam site between the upstream, existing Riverview Mill Dam (owned by the West Point Manufacturing Company) and its own Goat Rock Dam located downstream from the potential dam site. Field foundation investigations were conducted and a preliminary Federal Power Commission permit is obtained.
1924 - Columbus Electric and Power Company files a major license application to the Federal Power Commission on June 27, 1924. A 50-year license was granted on July 17, 1924. Preliminary designs finalized by engineers; concrete mixing building, railroad spur, rock crushing house, coffer dams and work camps designed and constructed.
1926 - By May 1, 1926, construction on both Units 1 and 2 was complete and the Bartletts Ferry plant began supplying power.
1928 - Columbus Electric and Power Company installed Unit 3 to meet growing demand for power in the area.
1930 - Georgia Power Company obtained all rights and properties of the Columbus Electric and Power Company on June 26, 1930, including the Bartletts Ferry project.
1946 - 1951 - Unit 4 was constructed, the main spillway section was strengthened with buttresses, and the earthen embankments were raised.
1971 - 1985 - The second powerhouse was constructed, which housed Units 5 and 6. On April 13, 1978, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued a new license for Bartletts Ferry. FERC stated that the new license would expire December 14, 2014. In 1982, procurement and construction for the project actually commenced. Unit 5 went into commercial operation October 1, 1985, and Unit 6 on November 1, 1985.
2008 - Georgia Power begins to relicense Bartletts Ferry project using the FERC's Integrated Licensing Procedure.
2012 - Georgia Power will file the Licensing Application.
2014 - Current license for Bartletts Ferry project expires December 14, 2014.
