Waterway Cleanup - Volunteer Programs
Georgia's 70,150 miles of streams and rivers need your help. Our waterways provide us with fresh drinking water, great recreational opportunities like canoeing and fishing, and they serve as a pleasant respite from our busy day to day lives. This is your opportunity to help by giving something back to the environment. Help us clean our rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands by joining in support of a local clean up program.
Renew Our Rivers / Rivers Alive
Each year Georgia Power sponsors and participates in river and lake cleanups around the state near many of our generating facilities. These events are hosted and sponsored by Georgia Power though Southern Company's Renew Our Rivers initiative. See upcoming clean-up schedules in your area.
In addition, Georgia Power is a corporate sponsor of Rivers Alive, a volunteer waterway cleanup event targeting streams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and wetlands across Georgia. Read information on getting involved in one or several planned events.

Falling Water
Fourteen lakes lie behind Georgia Power dams, each a treasure for local sportsmen and a respite for families caught in the rush of city life.
In many cases the dams have provided nearly a century of electrical power. Today, hydroelectricity accounts for approximately 1,078 megawatts of electricity. To see how falling water is turned into electricity, visit How Hydroelectricity Works.
The dams also establish shorelines for lake front homes, hotels, wilderness areas and parks. All of them offer increased economic and recreational opportunities for the communities they serve.
