Vogtle on time, on budget so far

Work on Plant Vogtle's Units 3 and 4 is on schedule and within budget.

That was Georgia Power's primary message during the Georgia Public Service Commission's first hearing on Nov. 9 to review any proposed revisions and verification of expenditures for the project.

Work continues at Plant Vogtle as site work is being done for Units 3 and 4. Workers are digging two tremendous holes at the plant, one of which is already 45 feet deep, and the other is 30 feet deep.

The PSC earlier this year approved Georgia Power's request to certify construction of the new Vogtle units. As part of the agreement, the company must file semi-annual monitoring and monthly status reports with the PSC.

The monitoring report includes any proposed revisions to the cost estimate, construction schedule, or project configuration, as well as a report on actual costs incurred during the period covered by the report and an updated comparison of the economics of the certified project.

Jeff Burleson, director of Resource Policy and Planning, spoke on behalf of Georgia Power.

"I am pleased to report that the project is on schedule and on budget and cost pressures are being actively and prudently managed," Burleson stated in written testimony. "All the costs that have been incurred since June 30, 2009, were made pursuant to required terms and conditions."

He asked the PSC to verify and approve the expenditures. PSC staff and interveners were scheduled to offer pre-file testimony on Dec. 2. The remaining hearing schedule calls for:

  • Dec. 16   Hearing on staff and intervener testimony
  • Jan. 8    Georgia Power pre-files rebuttal testimony
  • Jan. 26    Hearing on company's rebuttal case
  • Feb. 5    Briefs
