(Founder) Henry M. Atkinson
(1862–1939) Born in Brookline, MA

In 1891, gained control of the Georgia Electric Light Company of Atlanta and reorganized it as Georgia Electric Light Company. In 1902, consolidated with several other companies to form Georgia Railway and Electric Company. Under his leadership, a statewide electric system was planned, which eventually led to the formation of the present-day Georgia Power Company.


Preston S. Arkwright, Sr.
(1871–1946) Born in Savannah, GA

After serving as legal counsel, was named president in 1902 of Georgia Railway and Electric Company. Served as president for forty-three years, during which time the rapidly growing company was first renamed Georgia Railway and Power Company and then Georgia Power Company.

W.E. Mitchell
(1882–1960) Born in Milton, MA

In 1945, he was elected second president of Georgia Power after a career that included positions at Alabama Power and Georgia Power. Known as an outstanding electrical engineer, he served, while president, on a commission appointed by the U.S. War Department to survey the effects of strategic bombing on electric power plants.

Preston S. Arkwright Jr.
(1901–1947) Born in Atlanta, GA

In 1947, named third president of Georgia Power after a career with the company as legal counsel and director. An avid sportsman and accomplished musician, his presidency was limited to less than one year due to an untimely death after a brief illness.

Clifford B. McManus
(1895–1981) Born in Smithville, GA

Named fourth president of Georgia Power in 1947. Served as president until 1951, and also as president of Southern Company. Oversaw a period of major construction that included completion of Plant Arkwright Unit 4 and Plant Atkinson Unit 4, and the start of construction at Plant Yates.

Harllee Branch, Jr.
(1906–2000) Born in Atlanta, GA

In 1951, named fifth president of Georgia Power. Served as president through 1956, when he was elected president of Southern Company, the parent of Georgia Power. Led company through an era known as “the golden age of utilities.”

John J. McDonough
(1901–1983) Born in Savannah, GA

In 1957, became sixth president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 1963. Also served as CEO and chairman of the board 1963–66. Led company through a period of declining energy prices, rapid growth, and relative prosperity. Oversaw the acquisition of Georgia Power & Light Company in Valdosta. Moved company headquarters from old Electric Building to 270 Peachtree.

Edwin I. Hatch
(1913–1997) Born in Uniontown, AL

In 1963, named seventh president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 1975 and Chairman of the Board from 1975–78. Oversaw startup of Plant Bowen, which would become the largest coal-fired producer of electricity in the country, as well as Plant Hatch, Georgia Power's first nuclear facility.

Robert Scherer
(1925–) Born in St. Louis, MO

In 1975, named eighth president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 1982, then again from 1987–88. Served as chief executive officer from 1978–1988. Led the company through one of most turbulent periods in its history, including rising costs and public concerns about nuclear safety. Initiated Good Cents program to emphasize energy efficiency.

James H. Miller, Jr.
(1922– ) Born in New Orleans, LA

In 1982, named ninth president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 1987. Oversaw completion of three 500 kV lines, creating major links in the state's transmission network, startup of nuclear plant Vogtle Unit I. Leadership credited with attainment of new heights in operating excellence and plant performance.

A.W. “Bill” Dahlberg
(1940– ) Born in Atlanta, GA

In 1988, named tenth president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 1994, when he was named president of Southern Company. Began his career as a helper in the metering department and rose to presidency. Oversaw startup of nuclear plant Vogtle Unit 2.

H. Allen Franklin
(1944– ) Born in Corner, AL

In 1994, became eleventh president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 1999, when he was named president and chief operating officer of Southern Company. Became chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Southern Company in 2001.

David M. Ratcliffe
(1948-) Born in Tifton, GA


In 1999, named twelfth president of Georgia Power. Served as president until 2004, when he became president of Southern Company. Began his 33-year career as a biologist. He was named president of Mississippi Power in 1991 and became chief financial officer for Georgia Power in 1998.

Michael D. Garrett
(1949-) Born in McRae, GA


In 2004, became thirteenth president of Georgia Power. Had been president of Mississippi Power since 2001. Began his career as a Georgia Power co-op student in 1968 and assumed additional positions of authority until transferring to Alabama Power in 1990 as Birmingham division vice president.
