Nuclear power is re-emerging as a viable way to meet our growing demand for electricity.

Georgia Power is taking steps to make nuclear energy an option to meet this demand beginning in 2016.

Why Nuclear Power?

Nuclear power is cost-competitive, clean and offers fuel diversity so that the company isn't limited to using one type of fuel.

Nuclear power plants:

  • Have operated safely and securely in the United States for decades.
  • Have operated safely and securely in Georgia since 1975 and currently provide about 20 percent of the state's electricity.
  • Are the only large-scale generation source that emits none of the "greenhouse gas," carbon dioxide.
  • Use fuel that is available worldwide from countries such as Canada and Australia.
  • Add fuel diversity to America's energy sources.
  • Account for 75 percent of all emission-free electricity in the U.S.
