High Voltage Safety Act

If you are responsible for any activity performed within 10 feet of an overhead high voltage line, you are required FIRST to give notice to the Utilities Protection Center.

The center may be reached by telephoning 1-800-282-7411 (or 770-623-4344 in Atlanta). Notice MUST be given at least 72 hours BEFORE commencing work. The UPC Operator will ask specific information about the work to be performed.

No work may be commenced within 10 feet of a high voltage line until the electric utility notified by the UPC has taken safety precautions against the danger from accidental contact.

The utility will respond in a reasonable time and, at its option, may choose to deenergize and ground the line, relocate it, install protective covering, or install mechanical barriers.
