Kirkwood Substation
To support the growing energy needs of new and existing residents and businesses in the Kirkwood, Edgewood and Decatur areas of Atlanta, Georgia Power must upgrade the electrical system.
This will require a new substation, located at 225 Rogers Street on a site that was the Pratt-Pullman Rail Yard.
Georgia Power began researching the electrical needs in this area several years ago. We considered several potential substation sites prior to selecting this site. The location puts the station along an existing utility corridor and provides the best position to relieve the load on existing lines while reducing the impact of transmission line construction on the community. Successful completion of this project will help us to continue providing the reliable service customers expect.
The company will work to reduce disruptions for area homeowners during the project and leave a landscaped, screened facility afterwards.
Georgia Power took public input during the summer and fall of 2007. Site work began late in 2007. Construction, landscaping and other work will continue in 2008.
Due to difficulties encountered during property acquisition and the need to cleanup pre-existing environmental issues discovered during site investigation and construction, the project completion date has been delayed from June 2008 to November 2008.
