Plant McDonough - Smyrna 230 kV Transmission Line
In late 2006, Georgia Power announced plans to retire two, smaller, coal-fueled generating units at Plant McDonough near Smyrna, Georgia. The company will replace those units with three 840-megawatt combined cycle natural gas units, which will provide a larger and cleaner source of energy close to the Metro Atlanta area.
In order to send the additional power from the new units to our customers, we must upgrade our transmission system. We will rebuild the old transmission line from Plant McDonough to Smyrna while also constructing a new, higher-capacity line in the same vicinity.
The section we are rebuilding contains old box towers that we will replace with new single-pole structures. For most of the route, we will build two line-circuits on one set of poles.
We do not expect any displacement of homeowners, during this project. Some of this line route dates to early in the last century, however, and it must be brought to current right of way standards for the new lines. We will work with property owners to compensate them for any additional rights that are required.
The section from Spring Road to Cobb Parkway and north on Cobb Parkway will be on new right of way, carefully designed and routed to limit community impact.
Transmission line construction off the plant site is slated to begin in 2009. We expect the lines to be operational in 2011.
