Georgia Power

University Center Substation Project

Georgia Power proposes to construct a new substation and distribution facilities known as the University Center Substation on a 2.05 acre site at the corner of Whitehall Street and Metropolitan Avenue in the City of Atlanta.

The colleges within the Atlanta University Center (AUC) are continuing to grow and expand and renewed residential and commercial growth in the area are driving the need to expand the electrical system by 2009.

The Georgia Power land location committee looked at many sites for the substation; however, from an engineering and cost standpoint, locating the substation on the selected site is the most practical and feasible option.

Georgia Power's site selection committee also assessed the community impacts that could result from construction and operation of the substation.

Landscaping following construction will ensure that the substation blends in more readily with the surrounding community.

In an effort to make the surrounding neighborhoods and elected officials aware of the project, an Open House was held on September 23rd. Grading work is planned to begin in October 2008.
