Hurricane Helene

Helene is the most destructive hurricane to ever hit the Georgia Power system.

Crews working to restore power

We have 20,000+ personnel fully engaged in storm restoration – this has doubled from the 10,000 we had in place before the storm. More info

Still impacted customers

Efforts have intensified to restore power to the approximately 200,000 customers who remain without power. Crews are working around the clock and continue to converge on and deploy in the hardest hit areas and will remain in the field until every customer has been restored. More info

Already restored customers

As of Wednesday afternoon, we have restored power to over 1.14 million customers impacted by Hurricane Helene – approximately 85% of all impacted customers. More info

Please continue to avoid downed lines, trees, metal fences, and standing water as they could be electrified.

Areas still without power

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our crew members are working to restore services as quickly as possible.

Please visit our Outage Map for the latest update on our restoration process, including estimated times of restoration. We will make every effort to beat these estimates and return power sooner than expected.

While damage and treacherous conditions remain, teams are working around the clock and will remain in the field until every customer who can accept power is restored.

While crews continue to face hurdles such as impassable roads, cellular and communications issues, and tree damage, progress is being made in the hardest hit communities in the areas around Augusta, Savannah, Macon and Valdosta.

We prioritize public safety and critical infrastructure in our restoration efforts - hospitals, police stations, etc. - followed by repairs that restore power to the largest number of customers the fastest.

Historic damage to Georgia's electric infrastructure

As we’re responding to outages caused by Hurricane Helene, our crews have encountered treacherous conditions in communities across the state, making immediate power restoration incredibly difficult or in many situations impossible.

In many communities, the damage to the infrastructure is so severe that our crews are essentially rebuilding the grid and not just repairing specific elements.

We are inspired by the resilience and dedication shown by our communities, our crews, and our partners as our restoration efforts continue.

From the damage brought on by Helene, we're in the process of:

  • Repairing or replacing 8,000+ power poles
  • Replacing 21,000+ spans of wire equivalent to more than 1,000 miles
  • Replacing 1,500+ transformers
  • Removing 3,200+ trees on power lines

How we planned for Helene

Planning, preparation, and technology allowed us to respond to outages and restore power to our customers as soon as weather conditions allowed.

Preparation included:

  • Tracking Hurricane Helene’s path for over a week before it reached Georgia.

  • Pre-positioning restoration team, equipment, and supplies near areas of anticipated impact including extra transformers, poles, cable and other equipment.

  • Engaging our partners in our mutual assistance network proactively mobilizing crews from over 35 companies from states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

  • Collaborating with our Southern Company partners to enlist support from Alabama Power, Mississippi Power and dozens of other companies. The response force currently engaged is larger than those needed of other major hurricanes including Michael, Irma and Zeta.

Technology we’ve leveraged:

  • Smart grid technology has helped identify issues, reroute power, and restore service faster for customers.

  • Utilizing drones and helicopters has expedited damage assessment and allowing us to dispatch restoration crews and equipment faster.
