Hairpin Line Rebuild
As part of Georgia Power's commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity, the company is rebuilding its 8-mile Jack McDonough-Peachtree Boulevard 230 kV line that begins at Plant McDonough in Smyrna (Cobb County) and ends at the Boulevard substation (Fulton County). The construction process will begin in the fall of 2015 and end in the fall of 2018.
The rebuild is necessary because the line and structures have reached the end of their useful life. The line is critical to electric service in Atlanta and the rebuild is necessary to maintain reliable service. Continued maintenance will not resolve the aging and corrosion issues.
Transmission lines are a necessary part of our infrastructure; they move the power from our plants to area substations and ultimately to our customers.
The Jack McDonough-Peachtree Boulevard 230 kV transmission line is extremely important to the reliability of power service throughout Atlanta. The line not only serves residents, but critical services such as the Centers for Disease Control, the Atlanta Airport, the Atlanta Water Department, Piedmont Hospital and others.
The construction process will not affect current electric service. With the completion of the line, residents and businesses will see a direct benefit of improved reliability and less maintenance work on the line. During the construction process, Georgia Power will work to complete the project with minimal impact on the residents and businesses near the line.
In addition, the company will ensure its environmental impact is minimal and work directly with the property owner on landscape issues.
The two-legged hairpin structures will be replaced by steel single-pole structures with concrete foundations.
