Georgia Power Chairman, President and CEO Paul Bowers was recently recognized as a 2018 Georgia Trustee – the highest honor the State of Georgia can bestow on an individual – by the Office of the Governor and the Georgia Historical Society.

Gov. Nathan Deal inducted Bowers, along with colleague Delta CEO Ed Bastian, Saturday night at the Georgia Historical Society's Trustees Gala in downtown Savannah, where the Historical Society is located.

Each year, the Governor annually appoints new trustees whose actions of service and philanthropy have helped shaped the state. The Georgia Historical Society said Bowers exemplifies in his life and career the highest standard of the motto of the original trustees – Non Sibi, Sed Aliis – ‘Not for Self, but for Others.’

At the gala, Bowers was both honored and humbled to be selected as a Georgia Trustee by the Georgia Historical Society and shared the special meaning of being inducted by Gov. Deal. The two, who assumed their current roles around the same time, have grown in their jobs and friendship together. Additionally, Bowers praised the Society not only for their efforts to preserve and share some of our state’s most important history, but also for its sustained mission to help educate Georgia students and citizens.

As part of his involvement in the state, Bowers was the 2016 chair of the Atlanta Committee for Progress, a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Energy Policy Council, serves on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and is the current chair of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, as well as multiple other boards throughout the state.

He joins state leaders such as Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-a; Andrew Young, former Mayor of Atlanta; Arthur Blank, Co-founder of Home Depot and Owner of the Atlanta Falcons; and more as a trustee.

In 2009 the Georgia Historical Society in conjunction with the Office of the Governor reconstituted the Georgia Trustees as a way to honor Georgians whose lives and accomplishments reflect the ideals of the original trustees. The original Georgia Trustees, a governing body chartered and appointed by His Majesty King George II of England in 1732, was founded to establish a new colony in North America.
