Georgia Power contributes to the gift of vision for Atlanta students

Georgia Power recently recognized students at an event at KIPP WAYS Academy and KIPP WAYS Primary, tuition-free public charter schools in Atlanta, by donating $15,000 to, “Vision to Learn,” a non-profit charity that improves reading proficiency by filling the need for students who do not have the access needed for optometric care. The company’s donation will allow students to receive a vision screening and enable 150 students who fail the screening to receive an eye exam and a pair of glasses.

The recent event marked the completion of Vision to Learn’s first year helping kids in Atlanta Public Schools and celebrated the initiative’s growing impact. To date, the nonprofit has helped more than 1,500 kids in Atlanta. At KIPP WAYS Academy and KIPP WAYS Primary, 331 students were provided with vision screenings and 46% needed glasses. 167 students received eye exams and 153 were provided with glasses.

An estimated two million students in the United States lack the glasses they need at school, including an estimated 55,000 in Atlanta. Founded in 2012 in Los Angeles, Vision to Learn now provides eye exams and glasses to children in low-income communities in 242 cities in 12 states.

Along with Georgia Power, several national charitable foundations support Vision to Learn’s program in Atlanta including the Atlanta Hawks Foundation, Chick-fil-A Foundation, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Learn4Life and Essilor Vision Foundation.
