Georgia Power encourages customers to prepare for the winter season

December 4, 2023

In recognition of Winter Weather Preparedness Week on December 4-8, Georgia Power encourages customers to prepare now for the upcoming winter season.

The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency states that Winter Weather Preparedness Week is designed to raise awareness of winter weather hazards and reinforce understanding of winter weather terminology. Georgia Power supports this initiative to further educate Georgians about potential threats from winter weather and the benefits of preparing before a storm hits.

Resources are available at GeorgiaPower.com/WinterPrep to help customers plan, including information on building an emergency kit, staying connected, understanding watches vs. warnings and more.

Additional safety and preparedness tips for customers during extreme cold weather include:

  • Have a flashlight, a portable phone charger, and spare batteries on hand in case the power goes out.
  • Maintain ventilation around fireplaces.
  • Use space heaters only on level surfaces and keep away from furniture, curtains, water, children and pets.
  • Never use generators indoors. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions supplied with the generator model.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit for your home and vehicle.
  • If there is a power outage in your area, visit our Outage & Storm Center at GeorgiaPower.com/Storm to review safety tips, enroll in outage alerts and more.
