Meet Brandon, Instrument & Controls Technician Sr., Renewable & Resilient Generation

Brandon was born and raised in Gray, Georgia – about halfway between Macon and Milledgeville, and today lives in a house he built less than 10 minutes from his childhood home. After playing baseball through high school, he attended Central Georgia Technical College where he earned an associate degree in industrial maintenance and control systems.

Brandon began his career doing commercial electrical work before transitioning to industrial controls. His Georgia Power journey began at Plant Scherer in Juliette, where he worked as a contractor for a few years before joining the company full time in 2018.

Since 2020, Brandon has been a part of one of Georgia Power’s most important and dynamic sectors. He is one of a small team that manages Georgia’s Renewable and Resilient generation sources. These days, that means a lot of solar energy.

Solar energy has experienced remarkable growth in the United States over the past decade, driven by advances in technology, decreasing costs, and a supportive regulatory environment. In recent years the U.S. has significantly increased its solar capacity, with the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) reporting a more than 4,000% increase in solar installations since 2010.

In Georgia, solar energy has also seen substantial growth, positioning the state as a leader in solar capacity in the southeastern U.S. Georgia's favorable solar climate has facilitated the expansion of both residential and commercial solar projects, and the state ranks among the top ten in the nation for installed solar capacity.

Brandon’s team alone is responsible for 372 megawatt hours of production across the state, with Brandon alone managing more than 1,000 acres of solar fields, containing more than three quarters of 1 million solar panels.

For Brandon, that means everything from the maintenance of the sites – including planned outage and routine preventive maintenance – to safety, compliance, and plant management responsibilities for each of his sites.

It’s not simply about maintenance, however. Brandon and his team are working to ensure that Georgia Power operates its solar energy portfolio to the highest standards and are working to create an industry standard that Georgians can trust and be proud of.

When he’s not in the fields, Brandon can be found with his family or on the diamond. He has two sons who are heavily involved in sports, one in basketball and one in baseball. Brandon is also a coach for the Atlanta Braves 15-U Scout Team along with Braves legend Ryan Klesko and a litany of other Major League luminaries.

As solar and other renewable energy technologies continue to grow and advance, Georgians should rest easy knowing that people like Brandon are passionately dedicated to ensuring that they are operated to the highest standard: the Georgia Power standard.
