Vogtle stakeholders raise over half a million dollars for community through annual Citizens of Georgia Power clay shoot

In an effort to raise money for the Family YMCA being built in Burke County, Ga., the Plant Vogtle Citizens of Georgia Power chapter held its fifth annual Sporting Clays Tournament and Golf Tournament. The event, held Oct. 19-20 at the Sage Valley Golf Club near Augusta, raised more than $144,000. Since the event started in 2013, more than $500,000 has been raised in support of the local community.
The construction of the Family YMCA is a part of a larger effort coined the Neighborhood Renewal project, an alliance between Plant Vogtle and the Burke County community that aims to improve the lives of those who live in Vogtle’s surrounding area. Burke County leaders who make up the Neighborhood Renewal board of directors identified the need for a common meeting place in the community, somewhere that offered activities and programs especially for youth. With this need identified, plans to build a Family YMCA in the area began to take shape.
“It’s exciting to see what the fundraiser continues to do each year for the community,” said Stephen King, Citizens of Georgia Power representative. “The Family Y is going to be a place for Burke County residents to gather and grow together. Vogtle wants that for the members of the community.”
Fundraiser sponsors included Georgia Power, Bechtel, Westinghouse, Williams Industrial, Sargent & Lundy, Thompson Industrial, Vigor, Troutman Sanders, The Kenrich Group, Superheat FGH, Balch & Bingham, Oglethorpe Power Company, Promatic, Lowe Engineering and the National Wild Turkey Federation.
