Jerry Latvala believes in angels. In fact, he has served as one the past three years by transporting patients who are too weak to travel via car in his small aircraft.
Latvala, key account manager, Coastal Region, is a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, a non-profit organization that serves those who reside in or are traveling to or through the states of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and the Carolinas. Its mission includes providing routine treatment flights, compassionate care and other medical-related flights, as referred to the group by health care providers. The Angel Flight philosophy is that the cost of travel should never stand in the way of people receiving medical care.
Latvala selects his missions via the Angel Flight website, using his own money to pay for fuel and often using his vacation days to do it.
"I've been working with Georgia Power for 35 years, so I don't mind using my days for that," he said. "Their organization does 1,000 (flights) a year. My doing a dozen or so a year is but a drop in the bucket. Someday I hope to retire and do more."
