Ervan Hancock, Georgia Power Renewable Implementation manager, recently helped flip the ceremonial switch to the largest solar farm in Georgia.
Hancock joined Georgia Public Service Commissioner Lauren "Bubba" McDonald and officials from Phoenix Solar and Silicon Ranch Corp. for the dedication of the 30-megawatt (MW) Social Circle Solar Farm.
The Social Circle Solar Farm, located along a rural road near Social Circle, was developed as part of Georgia Power’s Large-Scale Solar Initiative. It comprises more than 130,000 solar modules covering more than 150 acres. The solar farm was developed by Silicon Ranch Corp. and designed by Phoenix Solar.
The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) approved Georgia Power’s Large-Scale Solar Iinitiative in 2011. The initiative allows Georgia Power to purchase up to 50 MW of solar photovoltaic resources capped at 30 MW per project. The Social Circle Solar Farm’s power will be sold to Georgia Power under a long-term power purchase agreement.
“This solar farm is a great example of the growth of solar in the state,” said Hancock. “Back in 2011, 50 megawatts was a big deal. However, we have continued to build on those successes, responsibly adding more than $1.7 billion of cost-effective renewables to the state. Georgia is now one of the fastest growing and most competitive solar markets in the nation.”
Georgia Power anticipates more than 500 new solar projects will be brought online in the coming years as part of the company’s various programs. All of Georgia Power's solar resources have been procured through constructive regulatory policy aimed at limiting additional upward pressure on rates.
“This is an example of the commission, industry and Georgia Power working together to benefit all Georgians,” said McDonald. “This facility will generate more than 30 megawatts of clean energy and reduce pollution."
“We are very proud of this facility,” said Matt Kisber, president and CEO of Silicon Ranch. “This is an extremely successful venture for all parties, including ourselves, the PSC, Georgia Power and the community.”
