As Roger approaches retirement in early 2026, his remarkable 42-year career at Georgia Power's Plant Bowen stands as a testament to dedication and community spirit. Roger, who lives on a 72-acre farm between Rome and Rockmart, Georgia, with his loving wife, jokes, "I’ll have my work cut out for me after retirement from Georgia Power."
His post-retirement plans include traveling with his wife, but his legacy at Bowen will surely endure.
In his current role as Operations Team Leader at the coal-fired plant, Roger oversees the training center, ensuring new employees, like auxiliary equipment operators, receive the lessons they need to make sure the equipment is running safely and reliably.
"I enjoy my work, and Bowen has been good to me," Roger said, cherishing the family-like atmosphere and the camaraderie built over years.
His fondest memories include retirees returning for annual picnics, some even cooking BBQ, fostering a sense of community that transcends generations.
He chuckled, reflecting on his claim to fame in the early 2000s for starting the first induced draft fans for Units 3 and 4. These fans are critical components used in power plants to control flue gas flow and ensure the plant's safe operation.
Roger also plays a vital role in hydrogen purge training for boiler turbine operators and team leaders, a critical aspect of plant safety and efficiency. His influence is felt across the team, with many looking up to him as a mentor. Roger's son has followed in his footsteps, securing a team leader position at Bowen, continuing the family legacy.
Inspired by his late brother, a former mechanic at Bowen, Roger joined the company in 1984, starting in laborer roles. As he prepares for retirement, Roger hopes to be remembered for how he carried himself, treated people, and did his job, leaving a positive impact on those who worked alongside him.
