Behind Every Flip of the Switch: Meet Scott

Growing up on a dairy farm in Eatonton, Georgia, Scott is a Senior Instrumentation Controls Technician at Wallace Dam, part of the Central Georgia Hydro Team. With an impressive 40-year tenure at Georgia Power, Scott's contributions have been vital to the company’s success and the reliable energy it provides.

Scott learned the value of hard work early on. At just 18 years old, he embarked on remodeling his great-grandparents' house, a project completed by the age of 21, where he still resides today. Scott credits his Generation teammates over the years for imparting the skills that made this possible.

"I learned a lot of carpentry skills from my fellow employees who never hesitated to share their skills while remodeling the old homeplace,” he said. “They’ve even come out to help me during their time off.”

Scott's journey with his work family began at Plant Branch in Milledgeville, where he served as a laborer. He transitioned through roles such as switchman and sampler in fossil fuels and coal equipment operator. Athens Technical College helped strengthen his expertise in managing turbine and generator control systems for the last 26 years of his career.

Reflecting on his career, Scott cherishes the camaraderie within the hydro team.

"One of my favorite parts about working in hydro is being on the lake and working with seasoned people,” he said. “We look out for each other like one big family. ... Generation is behind the scenes, so some people don’t know we wear multiple hats. What I admire most is when challenges like forced outages happen, mainly due to bad weather storms, we come together swiftly to get electricity going back through the powerlines for our customers.”

Scott's family legacy continues with his son, a lineman for another company, and his daughter and her husband, both Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents. Scott is also a proud grandfather of two boys and one girl. Scott considers his wife Carla the “glue” that holds the family together.

“I am very blessed to have a supporting family, as Georgia Power consumes a lot of my time when emergency events unfold,” he said.

Scott’s words of wisdom to the next generation of employees are, “Do the things that bring you alive inside. Don’t let the world tell you what that should be.”
