Georgia Power 2019 Community Partnerships

Georgia is the home to incredible organizations doing great work for our communities. Georgia Power is proud to partner with many of them on community-focused events throughout the year. Some of the events we organized or supported in 2019 include: Aging Well Expo, Univision 34 Atlanta Cinco de Mayo, Copa United, Hispanic and Religious Leaders Luncheons, JapanFest, and Pride Atlanta.

Aging Well Expo

The second Aging Well Expo (AWE) was held in May at Georgia State University with over 1,500 seniors attending. The multi-cultural event is designed to educate today’s active senior population on health and wellness programs.

Expo activities included on-site health screenings, art lessons, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, and a vendor fair. The event's inaugural year was 2018, with more than 700 participants attending.  AWE is the product of a tremendous partnership between Georgia Power, City of Atlanta, and AARP Georgia.

Univision 34 Atlanta - Cinco de Mayo

Univision 34 Atlanta’s Cinco de Mayo event took place at Plaza Fiesta and was filled with live music, vendor booths, and great food. Georgia Power was on hand to share information about company programs and residential energy efficiency tips.

Employees from Georgia Power’s Amigos employee resource group answered customer questions and distributed materials in English and Spanish to many of the 40,000 people attending the event.

Copa United

Georgia Power employees laced up their cleats to play in the Copa United corporate charity soccer tournament held in May.

Hosted in partnership with the Hispanic Corporate Council of Atlanta, Copa United brought together corporate teams from across metro Atlanta to play and help impact the lives of local Hispanic youth. Funds from Copa United benefit the Latin American Association and Soccer in the Streets organizations that provide educational, scholarship and leadership development opportunities for Hispanic students.

Georgia Power Hispanic and Religious Leaders Luncheons

Georgia Power Chairman, President, and CEO Paul Bowers hosted luncheons with Hispanic and Religious leaders to update both groups on company initiatives and discuss community partnerships.

The Religious Leaders Luncheon held in June had over 35 faith-based leaders in attendance. Updates on Georgia Power’s environmental initiatives and Plant Vogtle were presented. Attendees shared community issues and heard about the company’s workforce development strategy, including Georgia Power’s linemen training program.

More than 40 Hispanic leaders attended the September meeting in Atlanta. Leaders from community organizations, business and elected officials were part of the audience.  Presentations by Georgia Power leaders included Georgia Power’s expanding renewables programs along with discussions on education and a progress report on the Plant Vogtle expansion.

JapanFest

Georgia Power was proud to support JapanFest 2019 in September. The festival is considered the largest Japan-related event in the Southeastern United States.

Over 25,000 visitors attended the two-day event that immersed attendees in the Japanese culture. Georgia Power employees from our Asian-Pacific American employee resource group provided information on energy efficiency and other company programs and services.

Pride Festival/Parade

Georgia Power employees played an active role in this year’s Pride Festival and Parade held in October. They staffed the weekend Georgia Power information booth and marched in the famous parade despite the rainy weather conditions. Over 320,000 people attended the three-day festival.

Over 50 employees from the employee resource group PRIDE walked behind an electric vehicle and Georgia Power bucket truck in the 49th Annual Pride Parade. Cell phone charging stations located at the Georgia Power booth and sponsors area were a big hit with festival attendees throughout the entire weekend.
