Here for You: Powering Georgia, Every Day

Rebuilding Stronger After Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene made landfall at 11:10 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2024, as a Category 4 hurricane and entered South Georgia near Valdosta, bringing 80-100 mph winds, heavy rain, and severe damage.

The final assessments of the devastation caused by the storm would show it to be the most destructive storm in our company's history, completely destroying much of the electric grid infrastructure in many communities across Georgia.

When something of this magnitude happens, it’s not just about making sure that people get their power restored, but rather we work hard to rebuild what was lost—stronger.

By replacing damaged infrastructure with more resilient materials and upgrading critical technology, we’ve created a smarter, sturdier system designed to withstand future storms and serve all communities more reliably, so that they can focus on restoring what matters even more—hope.

What goes into providing reliable service?

It starts long before you flip the switch. Our thousands of team members work hard at our plants, substations and along the lines to make sure we are always ready.

It’s around-the-clock preparation and rapid response when restoration is needed.

Generating Power: Always Here.

Meeting demand and preparing for growth so we’re always on.

Reliability starts with producing power for our 2.8 million customers – and growing. Through our diverse network of electric generation plants, hydro dams and multiple solar energy facilities across the state, we’re meeting demand right now and preparing for Georgia’s growth. In a recent assessment, our non-nuclear energy generation assets achieved an outage rate of 1.49% - among the best in the industry

Delivering Power: Always Ready.

Doing everything we can to keep the grid strong and dependable.

Power moves across our state through a network of nearly 20,000 high-voltage transmission lines, various substations, and distribution lines that service homes and businesses. We’re constantly evaluating, upgrading, and maintaining that infrastructure to prevent outages and enable rapid restoration when they happen. Through these purposeful investments and data-driven approach, customers last year experienced an average of 15% fewer power outages and restoration times an average of 27 minutes faster than the previous year.

We mobilize the latest technology, whether in trimming the trees around lines or installing automated devices that can detect outages, to keep the grid ready to deliver not only during storms, but every day. More than 70% of our distribution grid can now be considering "self-healing", which prevented nearly 94 million outage minutes last year.

Learn from Tami Barron, SVP of Distribution on the ways we are strengthening the electric grid.

Battery Storage

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are part of our long-term strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. These devices allow the storage of energy from renewables like solar and wind to be used when needed.

Smart Grid

Automated line devices detect outages and automatically reroute power to isolate outages to small portions of the line so fewer customers lose power.

Plant Vogtle Nuclear Expansion

With the completion of our newest nuclear power unit, Plant Vogtle is the largest generator of clean energy in the United States. Nuclear energy is the most reliable energy source, able to generate electricity at full power 24/7 when operational. Plus, it requires fewer maintenance outages and isn’t subject to unpredictable weather.
