Meet Maja, Contractor Support Specialist at Plant Scherer

Macon native Maja Duckworth learned to work hard way before she landed at Plant Scherer. When she was a teenager, Maja started working in her mother’s insurance agency and excelled so quickly that she became a licensed property and casualty insurance agent and worked in the field for nearly two decades.

Having only known the insurance industry and hoping for a fresh challenge, Maja left to try something new. She spent some time as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service before signing on with Georgia Power to become an equipment operator at Plant Scherer.

Located in Juliette, Georgia, Plant Scherer is one of the largest power plants in the United States and plays a significant role in the state's energy landscape. Its generating capacity of 3,520 megawatts provides reliable electricity to millions of homes and businesses across Georgia. The plant's sheer size and output make it a cornerstone of the state's energy infrastructure, contributing to grid stability and energy reliability. Plant Scherer is a critical component of Georgia's power generation, ensuring a steady supply of electricity that helps keep Georgia one of the best places to reside in the country.

After her stint as equipment operator, Maja had the opportunity to shadow several maintenance specialists. Her mentor, Melissa Bentley, suggested she apply for an open contractor support role when it came available. She did, and now Maja serves as the Contract Support Specialist at Plant Scherer.

As a Contractor Support Specialist, Maja plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of contractor activities on-site. Her duties encompass managing labor rate contracts, overseeing renewals, and updating contractor rates. Maja is responsible for tracking timesheets as well as ensuring compliance with safety and health orientation checklists. Additionally, she maintains safety statistics and is heavily involved in the logistics and planning for plant outages, including coordinating materials, supplies, and trailers for contractors. Her meticulous attention to detail and proactive management help maintain operational efficiency and safety standards at the plant.

When she isn’t helping keep Plant Scherer on track, Maja can be found outdoors. An avid hiker, camper, and skiier,  Maja is always planning her next adventure. On days when she can’t be found in the wild, she might be reading or building something out of Legos (currently the Milky Way Galaxy.)
