As part of long-term investments in Georgia Power’s statewide transmission system, this project includes rebuilding the existing approximately 2.5‑mile Decatur – Scottdale 115 kV transmission line between the Scottdale Substation in DeKalb County and the Decatur Substation on East College Avenue, as well as relocating approximately 0.7 miles of line. This is a rebuild project driven by the age of the existing infrastructure, which was originally constructed in 1965. This project is part of Georgia Power’s ongoing commitment to strengthen and expand the electric grid. By replacing aging infrastructure with more modern materials and design, the project will enhance system reliability, support Georgia’s evolving energy needs, and help ensure safe, resilient electric service for decades to come.

This project is not being built to serve a specific customer or facility. The Decatur-Scottdale 115 kV Transmission Line is part of Georgia Power’s broader, long-term investment in strengthening and expanding the electric grid across the state. Over the next 10 years, we have proposed building more than 1,000 miles of new transmission lines to improve efficiency and resiliency and serve a growing state. These projects are essential to support Georgia’s growing energy needs, improve system reliability, and ensure safe, resilient service for decades to come.
We have a thorough process for determining transmission line routing and facility placement. We carefully evaluate routes and consider factors such as safety, existing land uses in the area, existing corridors, environmental conditions, and engineering practices related to the construction and operation of the lines.
Vegetation removal is a typical part of transmission line projects to maintain safe clearance and reliable service. For this rebuild project, most work will occur within or near the existing transmission line corridor, where vegetation management is already required. In some areas, vegetation including trees and brush may be trimmed or removed to support rebuilding activities or the limited relocation portion of the line. The route is selected based on various considerations, including safety, existing land uses in the area, existing transmission corridors, environmental conditions, engineering practices related to the construction and operation of the lines.

An easement is a legal right to use another person's land for a specific purpose, where a payment is paid to the owner of the property in return for the right of easement. This right allows the easement holder to enter and use the land for activities such as utility installation, access, or maintenance. The original owner retains legal title to the land, but the easement holder has the right to use it as specified in the easement agreement.
