Employees volunteer to clean up natural areas near plant site

As part of an ongoing environmental stewardship initiative at Plant Vogtle, more than two dozen volunteers recently picked up 68 bags of trash alongside River Road near the plant.

Volunteers included employees from Southern Nuclear, Georgia Power, Bechtel and Richmond County Constructors. Also volunteering their time were representatives from Thompson Industrial, Burke County Chamber of Commerce and Best Office Solutions. A local family, five grade-school students and a Southern Nuclear retiree also participated in the four-hour activity.

The highway cleanup was organized by the Plant Vogtle Wildlife Habitat Team, led by employees Rickey Hargrove and Ann Baker. Focused on promoting environmental stewardship, the team’s projects also involve migratory birds, game species, indigenous trees and other wildlife. Team members monitor various species, record data, erect habitats and do planting on a volunteer basis.

Because Plant Vogtle has a long history of commitment to habitat restoration, the site is certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). The WHC partners with corporations, their employees, fellow conservation organizations, government agencies and community members to recognize and encourage wildlife habitat projects for conservation, education and recreation.
