Georgia Power supports many initiatives through the state's university system, including Georgia's favorite college teams. Through a continued partnership with Georgia Tech, the company sponsored Georgia Tech's Professors of Excellence - a special recognition of those professors that go above and beyond in their teaching, specialty fields or communities. During Georgia Tech's 2017-2018 basketball season, these outstanding individuals were presented with a game ball and congratulated by one of Georgia Power's executive team at a special ceremony during the game.

 

Georgia Tech's Professors of Excellence Award Winners:

 

Dr. Susan Thomas

Developing new ideas on fighting cancer.

Award Presented during Georgia Tech vs. Virginia Tech

Dr. Thomas's research focuses on the role of biological transport phenomena in physiological and pathophysiological processes. Her laboratory specializes in incorporating mechanics with cell engineering, biochemistry, biomaterials, and immunology. Her focus on tumor progression and immunotherapeutics to treat cancer will not only contribute to the fundamental questions regarding harnessing the immune response to fight cancer, but will also pave the way for novel engineering approaches such as vaccines and cell or molecular-based therapies.

 

Dr. Mary G. McDonald

Focusing on inequality issues in American sports.

Award presented during Georgia Tech vs. Duke

Dr. McDonald is the Homer C. Rice Chair in Sports and Society. A past president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport, she has published more than 40 articles, book chapters, and co-edited Reading Sport: Critical Essays on Power and Representation -- a foundational work in the field which earned a Choice award as a top academic title. Her research focuses on American culture and sport including issues of inequality as related to gender, race, class, and sexuality. She has edited special issues of the Sociology of Sport Journal devoted to "identity and sport" and "whiteness and sport."

 

Dr. Craig Zimring

Researching how innovative design and classroom teaching can improve healthcare.

Award presented during Georgia Tech vs. Syracuse

An environmental psychologist and professor of architecture, Dr. Craig Zimring directs the SimTigrate Design Lab. He and his colleagues and students focus on how innovative, research-informed design can improve health and healthcare, and how research can be incorporated into classroom teaching, both to improve design and help students develop skills for practice. He has conducted over $7M in research with and for Mayo Clinic, Emory Healthcare, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Military Health System, HKS Architects, HDR Architects and many others, including safety-net clinics and international providers of healthcare. He has published over 100 scholarly and professional publications and received 11 awards for his research.

 

Dr. Jacqueline Garner

Fostering learning in economics through exceptional teaching.

Award presented during Georgia Tech vs. Notre Dame

Jacqueline Garner joined Georgia Tech in 2016. She received her Ph.D. from Georgia State University and during graduate school, Dr. Garner worked as a financial economist at The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. She has been published in numerous academic journals such as The Journal of Finance, The Journal of Business, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, and Financial Management, among others. Dr. Garner won several teaching awards, including the prestigious Lindback Award while she was a professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa.
