Georgia Power advises customers on 811 Safe Digging Day

On August 11, or “8/11,” Georgia Power reminds customers to dial 811 or visit georgia811.com at least three business days before any projects that require digging.

In many areas, electric cables and communication lines are buried in the ground along with gas and water pipes. By using the 811 system, the digging project can avoid potential hazards as well as costly repairs and even fines that can be imposed for violating Georgia’s “dig law.”

When customers call or visit online, they will be connected to their local 811 center. Georgia Power and other utilities will receive details about the project and proper next steps will be explained. Professional locators will mark the areas of underground lines with spray paint or flags to avoid electrical and other hazards.

 “One of the most potentially hazardous electrical situations in industrial plants, on construction sites, and in residential areas is accidental contact with overhead or underground wiring. This can happen whether you are involved with major construction at a business or planting flowers in your yard, so always remember to call before you dig,” said Jesus Rivera, Georgia Power’s Asset Protection Supervisor.
